Sci-Fi Award Season Is Here as Dune, Wicked, and The Substance Get Golden Globe Nods

Could this be the year another genre movie joins the small, elite list of films that win Best Picture? It happened in 2018 with The Shape of Water and this year there are three films that are now officially major contenders. The Golden Globe nominations were announced Monday and Dune: Part Two, Wicked, and The Substance all got multiple nominations, including Best Picture. The Globes are often seen as an Academy Award precursor, so if you’re a fan of sci-fi and fantasy, things are about to get exciting.

Dune: Part Two had the fewest nominations of the bunch, getting one for Best Picture – Drama as well as Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer. Next was Wicked which got nominations for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, and one for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. But the top genre pick was The Substance, which got five nominations: Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress for Demi Moore, Best Supporting Actress for Margaret Qualley, and Best Director and Best Screenplay for Coralie Fargeat.

There are certainly a few questions and caveats in there such as the distinction between the two Wicked leads, Dune not getting a nod for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, and always the fact the Globes nominate more films because they’re split into two categories. But these nominations do prove that the people out there voting for awards have seen these three films, love these three films, and that bodes well for them all come Oscar night next year.

More genre fare got nominations too. For example, The Penguin got three nominations. Hugh Grant, Sebastian Stan, and Amy Adams got Best Actor nods for Heretic, A Different Man, and Nightbitch respectively. And Squid Game got a nod for Best TV Series – Drama, even though it’s not on Netflix until December 26. Gotta love screeners! House of the Dragon also got one nomination: Emma D’Arcy for Best Actress.

The 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025 at 8 p.m. EST. Here’s the full rundown of nominees.
